Update From This Week’s Community Meeting

The Preserve Thornhill Woods Association conducted our third community wide meeting of 2014 on July 16, 2014. The meeting was held to brief the community on the latest status of the Jaffari development application and to give the community an opportunity to ask questions and to have their concerns addressed.

Community Meeting

We were pleased to have both Regional Councillor Deb Schulte and Regional Councillor Michael Di Biase in attendance at the meeting along with a number of City of Vaughan municipal candidates including Styles Weinberg (Candidate Ward 4), Josh Martow (Candidate Ward 5) and Frank Miele (Candidate for Regional Councillor).

We started the meeting by providing a quick overview of the application along with a detailed list of what has gone on since the City of Vaughan council meeting in February. The PTWA Chairman, Rom Koubi, spent time dispelling some of the rumours that are circulating regarding the application and charting a strategy for the coming months. The application is still going through the approval process and is the city is not pleased with what is currently being proposed in the application. The city would like to see the applicant stick to the city’s recently approved VOP 2010 plan and they are pressuring the applicant to make major changes to their proposal. In the event that the applicant is not open to making the requested changes, the city has committed to writing their final recommendation report based on whatever information has been submitted by the end of August. This report will then be presented to council in the first few weeks of September. The council members in attendance both indicated that they would not support the application in its current form and the York Region (the next approver after the city) has already gone on record with the same opinion. The meeting ended with an overview of our financial status along with a strong push for more donations. We cannot continue to object to this application without hiring legal and planning experts. These resources are expensive and the community must continue to raise money to prevent the application from moving forward.

We will post more details in the coming weeks as we get confirmation back from the city on whether the applicant plans to make revisions to their application. We are making significant progress and the city is supporting us all along the way.

We would like to thank Emil Yalizerov from Party Crew Entertainment for donating the use of his audio and video equipment for the meeting. We would also like to thank Alex Kapsh for the fantastic photos he took throughout the event. We are a community based rate payers association and without the help and assistance of many people, we could not effectively protect Thornhill Woods. Thanks to everyone who attended the meeting and special thanks to everyone who gave us a donation at the door! Your help is really appreciated!!!!

Thank you for your continued support. Together, as a united community, we are going to preserve the spirit and beauty of Thornhill Woods.

Total raised 2013-2017: $76,000, 2018: $15,780. See our post about how we use your donations for more information. Detailed financials will be presented at our upcoming event, March 22, 2018.
